INTER COUNTY FELL RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS
INGLETON JULY 19TH 2003
DISTANCE 7MLS. ASCENT 2000FT.
To the best of my knowledge this was the first time Warwickshire have competed in this event and I hope
it's the first of many such races. the race was
held in conjunction with Ingleton's Gala Day which proved quite
a pleasant diversion.
THE RACE
This was a fairly straightforward event, running in pleasant
conditions up a lump called Ingleborough which was
once thought to be the highest hill in England till somebody got a proper tape measure. Over 250 runners men and
women completed the course not without the inevitable falling over by one or two,
Lucy Whitaker who won a medal in this race last year, has not
been training due to heavy commitments in completing
her PhD thesis' however
she kindly agreed to turn out (it was her idea 12mths. ago). To her credit
class came to the fore
and she finished12th.
Rebecca Kendall, who was recruited at short notice, although disappointed at getting severe stitch on the descent still
managed a very creditable 22nd.
Val Carter, tried desperately to get out of it because of respiratory problems finally capitulated to save the team and had
a super run despite never having seen a fell race before let alone run in one. She finished 31st.
TEAM POSITION 5th
If anyone reading this is interested and the county want to please let me know, next year in the Langdales (fantastic area)
Eddie Cockayne.
team manager.
