INTER COUNTIES MATCH
SUNDAY 30th / MONDAY 31st MAY 2004
BEDFORD
The 2004 Inter Counties event took place at Bedford on Sunday 30th and Monday 31st of May, and once again the weather was dry and warm – good for both competitors and spectators.
Due to last minute injuries and a couple of no shows only four Warwickshire athletes competed on the Sunday.
Both Jamie McNiel and Nicola Woods competing in their first Intercounties match acquitted themselves well, with Nicola finishing 7th (18:02.57mins) in only her second 5000m and Jamie narrowly missing qualification for the Men’s 100m final (5th 10.89secs).
Also competing were Julian Flynn (non-scorer) and Michael McKernan in the Men’s Triple Jump, finishing 7th (14.43m) and 8th (14.25m) respectively.
Day two saw eight athletes competing for Warwickshire including Hillary Smith who finished 3rd in the Women’s Pole Vault with 3.60m.
Andi Drake was Warwickshire’s only winner over the 2 days winning the Men’s 3000m Walk in 11:48.72mins.
Late replacement Laura Kenney finished 3rd (4:32.76mins) in the Women’s 1500m. Steve Philips also occupied 3rd position in the Men’s Long Jump with a leap of 7.39m.
In the Women’s Discus Nardeep Dhaliwal narrowly missed out on a medal, finished 4th with 44.66m.
In the Men’s Mile Paul Moores finished 8th with 4:17.72mins in a closely contested race.
Both Jenny Christie (Women’s 400m) and Ryan Cox (Men’s 800m) missed out on qualification for the final, with Jenny finishing 4th in her heat with 56.29secs and Ryan finishing 5th in his heat with 1:58.69min.
There was a large field in the Men’s Javelin where Glynn Holllingworth finished 16th with a best throw of 57.62m.
Overall a good two days of athletics, with many good performances from Warwickshire athletes.
